x Fun trips during the autumn holidays with the kids

Whoopee, it's the autumn holidays! That means a fun week off from school and lots of activities together.

Because even in autumn, the Zeeland coast has plenty to offer. The entertainment teams are still dancing in full swing at the camp site, and the beach bars are still open. So come up to Zeeland in the autumn holidays for a fun outing with the kids.

Fun fact: the people of Zeeland take their autumn break in two different weeks. Most of the Zeeland population has their holiday week from 14 to 22 October, while Zeelandic Flanders has it the week after, from 23 to 27 October. But whichever week the children have their holiday, there’s always plenty of fun to be had in Zeeland.

Below you will find a list of my favorite things to to do with your kids in the autumn holidays.

1 – Forest Hike

Mijn favorite getaway during the autumn holidays was and continues to be the forest! I’m completely in love with the forest and all the more so in the autumn. Running through the brown leaves, collecting branches, and picking chestnut. Then to head home to tinker with all my new acquisitions. It was so much fun! And secretly, I still think it is. The largest forest of Zeeland you'll find in the Kop van Schouwen. The Westerschouwen Forestry offers an extensively large forest area, where you can find thousands of mushrooms in autumn! And if you're really lucky, you may spot a fallow deer or a wild pony.

2 – Discover Lake Grevelingen

The week of the autumn holidays is also the Grevelingen week. From 13 to 21 October, there are plenty of activities in the Zeeland nature, such as going on an island expedition with the Forestry Commission, going on seal safari, or spotting pink flamingos in the water.

3 – Crafts and Games in Terra Maris

In Terra Maris, the autumn holidays are a true autumn crafts workshop. Using leaves, chestnuts and all sorts of things, kids can craft the cutest animal figurines. And when they’re finished, they can run to the landscape garden to fly like an eagle, climb over the rope trail, and go hunting with bow and arrow. More information can be found here »

4 – Golfing Among the Cows

On the island of Tholen we celebrate the Region Week with plenty of fun child-friendly activities. From hikes to games, you don't have to look far to plan a fun excursion. In my opinion, the best fun to be had is Farmer’s Golfing. I played this once before, and it really cracked me up with laughter. It’s played in the meadows, among the cows, using a stick with a clog attached to it. Super fun for young and old!

5 – To the Zeelandic Museum

The Zeelandic Museum also celebrates the autumn holidays! So come on down to the museum with your kid(s) and get the creeps together. Go hunting for creepy objects and discover the museum together with your guide during the Museum Kids Week. The kids can also learn to draw scary bugs and craft monsters in the handicraft area. 6 – Making a Bird Swing

Now that autumn has arrived, it’s a great time to think of the animals outside. A little swing for the birds makes for a fun handicraft project at home. Buy some peanuts, apples, raisins and have your kids thread them all together. When the swing is finished, you can proudly hang it in the tree together and then enjoy looking at all the birds flying over to have a snack.

7 – To the Petting Zoo

Your kids will have lots of fun at the petting zoo. During the Christmas holidays, all kinds of activities are organized and you can handicrafts, romp around, and care for the animals. Middelburg holds special autumn holiday Pony Mornings, where kids can decorate and comb ponies, and take them for a ride. An ideal getaway for girls crazy about horses!

8 – Swimming

When the weather is on the bad side, swimming is always a fun activity! Zeeland offers several great tropical swimming pools where kids can splash around. Take the indoor swimming pool in Goes, for example. We went swimming there the other day, and we were racing on the slides, twirling around in the Crazy River, and doing laps in the indoor pool. 9 – Going to the Movies

Prefer to lay back in your lazy chair? Then go ahead and sink into your movie theater chair with a large bucket of popcorn! There are lots of fun children’s films playing at the theaters at the moment, such as Captain Underpants, My Giraffe, the new Sinterklaas movie, and plenty more. Prefer a less commercial movie? 't Beest in Goes is holding the Cinekid Festival this week with sensational international children's films. View the schedule here »

Have a great autumn holidays everyone!
